A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by thieves. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him, took everything he had, and left him half dead. Trying to stay conscious, he prayed that someone would stop to help him on the busy road.
A Priest, and later a Levite approached the intersection, but when they saw the man, each passed by on the other side, and ignored the mumble for help. After a few hours, a Samaritan approached the intersection and when he saw the wounded man, he had pity and bandaged his wounds. Then he drove him to the nearest hospital emergency room for treatment, made a deposit and promised to pay the balance.
The irony is that the wounded man did not receive help from the expected sources. If anyone would have compassion on a stranger, it should have been either the priest or the Levite, not a Samaritan business man. Jesus used this parable to illustrate that the true neighbor is the one who showed mercy and we are commanded to do likewise.
During the 10-year civil war in Sierra Leone, men, women and children had their limbs hacked off with machete. These groups are still disadvantaged, and the women amputees are languishing with no help. Most of the single mothers and orphans beg to make a living.
To further complicate the situation, the recent Ebola outbreak was severe in Sierra Leone with one of the highest number of Ebola cases and deaths. Many more people were killed, leaving even more children as orphans. The situation is getting grimmer and the need is more desperate. Life has become a struggle, and with each passing day, they are crying out for help, praying that someone would ease the pain.
However, like the wounded man, they have not gotten help from the expected sources. They have remained vulnerable in an environment where the average life expectancy is 39 years due to abject poverty. These women cannot help themselves; their only hope is the kindness of people who choose not to look away.
